Mike Frialde - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) has so far arrested 95 people for violating the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) since checkpoint operations for a Safe and Fair Elections (SAFE) started last January 10.

The checkpoint operations to impose the election-related gun ban would be implemented until June 8.

In its latest report, the PNP said that of those arrested so far, 90 are civilians, two are law enforcers (including a police officer), one is a militia member, and two are security guards.

The PNP also confiscated 79 guns during the checkpoint operations.

In addition to guns, police checkpoints were also able to confiscate 331 assorted weapons and illegal items since the start of operations last January 10.

The seized items include three gun replicas, two hand grenades, and 325 assorted ammunition rounds.

Meanwhile, the PNP has again reminded police officers manning SAFE checkpoints to strictly follow the Comelec’s guidelines.

Under the Comelec’s guidelines, the checkpoint area must be well-lit and properly identified signboard measuring three feet by four feet.

Only visual search is required at the checkpoint. No person may be subjected to a physical or body search in the absence of any reasonable ground. The public is not obliged to open the glove compartment, trunk or bags.

SAFE checkpoints should be led by an officer with a rank of at least a Lieutenant or an Inspector. The police officers manning the checkpoints must also observe the rule on the proper wearing of police uniforms.
