2 NPA rebels nabbed in Albay
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were arrested in an encounter with police and military operatives in Barangay Moroponros in Oas, Albay on Tuesday, the military said yesterday.
Col. Clyde Yucot, 901st Brigade commanding officer, said Army troops and members of the 5th Regional Public Safety Battalion of the Philippine National Police were conducting combat operations when they encountered the communist guerrillas at 2:14 p.m.
Two M-16 rifles and propaganda materials were recovered at the scene. The two rebels, who have yet to be identified, were turned over to the Oas police office.
On Tuesday, around 10 NPA guerrillas attacked a detachment of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Guijalo, Camarines Sur.
The rebels took an M-16 rifle, ammunition, two hand-held radios, Coast Guard uniforms and a mobile phone, and fired on the hull and engine of a PCG speedboat, said Lt. Archie Hicban, PCG Camarines Sur station commander.
Lt. Col. Joselito Pastrana, commander of the 42nd Infantry Battalion, said troops were deployed to secure the PCG station and hunt down the rebels.
