MANILA, Philippines — A barangay chairman was gunned down in Manila yesterday afternoon.

Abdul Munap Akok, chairman of Barangay 14, Zone 1 in Pasay, and a companion had just stepped out of a fastfood restaurant at the corner of F.B. Harrison and P. Ocampo streets when an unidentified man approached him and shot him several times at around 1 p.m.

Akok, 59, fell to the ground. Another man, riding a motorcycle, shot him several more times.

Witnesses said at least six men on three motorcycles shot Akok.

Police recovered 10 bullet casings from .45 caliber and 9mm pistols at the scene.

A police official said investigators are looking at the possibility that the killing was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, a relative of another Pasay barangay chairman was shot dead by unidentified assailants at past midnight yesterday.

Ferdinand Tan Decena, 45, a cousin of Barangay 25 chief Jovie Decena, died at the Pasay City General Hospital at around 1:45 a.m from gunshot wounds in the face and body.

Decena and his partner, Merly Magadalaga were waiting for a ride at the corner of F.B. Harrison and Arnaiz streets at around 1:13 a.m.when two men on a motorcycle stopped in front of them and shot Decena several times. Magadalaga was unhurt.

Police recovered nine 9mm bullet casings. The bullets also hit the right tail light and right rear wheel of a Mitsubishi Montero with plate number UFO-986.
