MANILA, Philippines — Workers of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) yesterday raided and dismantled illegal pig pens at the Baseco Compound in Port Area, Manila.

The raid – the second this week – was conducted after the PRRC discovered that the pig pens were unloading animal waste into the river.

PRRC executive director Jose Antonio Goitia said the residents also complained of foul odor in the area.

“We have repeatedly issued warnings to the owners but they took these for granted. Pig pens in residential areas pose health risks to the people and the environment,” Goitia said.

The PRRC was assisted by the Manila Police District, National Bureau of Investigation and Manila city hall during the demolition.
