“The Y stands for ‘youthfulness’,” says Bella Prieto of PHINMA Microtel Hotels on one of the newest hotels in the Mall of Asia area, Tryp (pronounced “trip”). Indeed, every detail of the hotel caters to the young and dynamic traveler, from the art on the walls created by graphic artist Dan Matutina, to the map art on the walls depicting popular sites in the metro, to the delightfully unexpected details around the hotel like signs that say “One More Chance” instead of the usual “Please place this sign on your bed if you would not like the linens to be changed” or the “Get Wet, Not Wild” sign in place of the dreary “Pool Rules and Regulations.”

MANILA, Philippines — Details are what set Tryp apart amid the cookie-cutter hotels characteristic of hotel chains. In fact, all 119 Tryp hotels around the world look different. Each reflects the modern culture and upbeat vibe of the bustling urban city that you find them in.

General manager Dean Cid is also known as the team captain.

For general manager Dean Cid, “One thing that makes us unique is our people know about the area Tryp is in. Part of their training is going to different tourist spots to get a feel of the city. When they talk to our guests they get to share what Manila has to offer.”

Tryp Mall of Asia Manila, the first of its kind in the Philippines, had its soft opening in October 2017 and grand launch just March this year. “We’re very optimistic about the brand,” says Cid.

Tryp originated in Spain and has several locations all over Europe, thus bringing the European market to a familiar name in Manila.

The hotel’s Spanish influence is evident in its all-day dining restaurant, Milagritos, that serves some Spanish-inspired dishes together with elevated comfort food such as the unforgettable kare-kare with Angus beef tripe and desserts that come straight out of Pinoy childhood fantasy: Orange Swit and Flat Tops and Chocnut flavored gelatos.

Another interesting feature of Tryp is the room offerings, designed to suit the needs of the modern traveler.

Aside from the standard rooms, there’s the Loft – a two-floor unit that fits five guests, with a queen bed and common areas on the first floor and bunk beds on the second floor. Watch out for the 4th of July room promo where guests can book the Loft at a special price.

The spacious Loft is perfect for families and groups of friends.

There’s also the Family Room, which offers bunk beds for the kids.

The Sunset Suite takes full advantage of the hotel’s vantage point of Manila Bay. Guests can also enjoy the surrounding area through the hotel’s partnerships with Bambikes tours and the Sunset Cruises, which has a dock that is walking distance from the hotel.

One of the most interesting room types is the fitness room, where you actually have workout equipment in your room. This is perfect for health enthusiasts or athletes who don’t want to put their workout on vacation, or those who are trying to live a healthier lifestyle – no more excuses, the gym is right there in the room!

Some suites also include amenities that you wouldn’t expect in a hotel, like a microwave and a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf coffeemaker.

When it comes to his personal favorite detail about Tryp, Cid goes back to his team. Each staff member from the president to housekeeping has a fun designation. GM Cid is fondly known as the team captain. The front desk receptionists are called the gust experience coordinators. Housekeeping staff are the maestros of senses.

The playful titles reflect Tryp’s unique, upbeat type of service. Staff is encouraged to engage more with guests and have meaningful conversations with them.

This way, they can encourage guests personally to explore the city and give them a warm local welcome. “It’s a more open, unique type of service – like a friend is talking to you,” says Prieto.

Eight more Tryps are set to spring up all over the country in the next ten years. “We’re looking for partners in urban locations like Cebu, Davao, Clark, BGC and more,” Cid adds. Judging by its first foray into the Philippines, without a doubt, each new Tryp hotel will truly celebrate the city that it will be located in.
