Ask any overseas Filipino worker (OFW) on the reason why they choose to work abroad and most answers would probably revolve around fulfilling life-long dreams and providing better lives for their families.

To achieve this dream, an increasing number of Filipinos has left the country in search of higher paying jobs and better career opportunities abroad. A 2017 survey commissioned by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) revealed that about 2.3 million OFWs are spread out across the world from April to Sept. 2017. This number is estimated to be around 11 million, if both immigrants and OFWs are included.

The Philippine economy is in a sound position today in part because of the steady growth and size of remittances of OFWs — recent figures place the amount as much as P205.2 billion. The money sent by parents, brothers, sisters, in-laws, aunts, uncles or cousins to families covers the daily living expenses, household bills, tuition fees, rent and other expenditures. If the family dreams of home ownership, the OFW breadwinner may decide to stay abroad a few more years longer.

The boy, now all grown up, calls his father and asks him to come home. Released

It is an accepted reality that for families to have a comfortable life, the OFWs must spend extended amounts of time away from his/her loved ones. In search for the dream home and a more comfortable life, OFWs are gladly making this selfless sacrifice. It’s very common for OFWs to forcibly missing important family gatherings, graduation dates, anniversaries, even birthdays and even major holidays like Christmas.

In the spirit of family reunions during the Yuletide season, leading real estate developer Century Properties has recently launched a 180-second short film titled “Kami Naman” that reflects on the sacrifices and important contributions of OFWs.

In the beginning, a little boy is shown patiently waiting for his father to arrive after long hours of work. To make ends meet, the father had to make the difficult choice of leaving his wife and son behind to work abroad. Years pass and the young boy is now a career professional, thanks to the good education provided by his OFW father. The son then asks his father to come home. Upon the father’s return, the son expresses his gratitude to his father by taking on the responsibility of completing the amortization of their new family abode, complete with all the furnishings. More importantly, the son commits to taking care of his father this time around — the fathers tearful eyes beaming with overwhelming pride. The story of “Kami Naman” reflects on the sacrifice of parents and how the child repays this debt with love and gratitude.
