MANILA, Philippines — It's not everyday that we hear stories about second chances and new beginnings. So let John Principe's story inspire you today and whenever you feel like all hope is lost for the world.

Principe may look like a typical youngster at first glance, but there is more to him beyond what's seen from the outside.

In 2013, Principe was caught and detained for carrying drugs. Asked why he did it, the boy said he did it to fend for his family. In a country where there is poverty and rampant drug trade, the plight of Principe is just one. There are hundreds, probably thousands of untold stories just like his'.

Instead of bawling in the cell and considering what's left of his life useless and pointless, he enrolled himself in high school through Alternative Learning System (ALS) program until he was released in June 2015.

On May 2, almost three years after his arrest, he dropped by the office of the Quezon City mayor. This time, not to confess about his wrongdoings but to reap the reward of his labor.

In a Facebook post, the Quezon City local government shared photos of Principe during his visit.

According to the post, Principe was one of the topnotchers of the city’s high school graduates. With an average of 99 percent in the ALS program equivalency exam, he landed the fourth highest among all Quezon City passers.

Being inspired by his hardwork and determination to change for the better and strive hard for his family, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista rewarded Principe with a full scholarship to a four-year course at the Quezon City Polytechnic University (QCPU).

Read his story here:

The journey of Principe is far from over as he continues the path that would lead him to fulfilling his dream of taking his family out of its current impoverished state. But his story will remain a spark of hope to those who think life is already hopeless.
