We Got Chew’! Mogu Mogu fuels hope, relief and smiles for struggling jeepney drivers, commuters
MANILA, Philippines — We’ve all seen the viral videos of Pinoy jeepney drivers lamenting over what’s left of their daily income due to the soaring gas prices. It’s not the physical exhaustion or the unforgiving summer heat that’s breaking them, rather the bitter reality that they don’t have enough to provide for and feed their families on a daily basis.
Point in case, the drivers serving the Pasig-Quiapo route who are heavily impacted by the gas crisis.
Jorgie Mancilla, explained the current situation, “Noong una, sa isang ikot namin, nagkakarga lang kami ng P400 [na halaga ng diesel], ngayon P800, P900. Hindi lamang doble, triple pa.”
As a result, what’s left to take home is “pangkain na lang talaga o pambaon ng eskwela kung may pasok. Sa halip na isang daan [na baon], naging trenta na lang,” Mancilla said.
His fellow driver Wilvin Diptas echoed this, “Minsan abunado pa sa diesel. Minsan umuuwi ako ng P200, P250 [lang ang kita].”
Their struggles are not left unseen or unheard.
‘We got chew!’
Fueling hope and providing relief among our public transport drivers, Mogu Mogu launched a community campaign with a sweet promise: “We got ‘chew’!”
Starting last April 13, Mogu Mogu rolled out the We Got Chew campaign, which aims to help uplift Filipinos on the road, commuters and drivers included.
“The Mogu Mogu team listened closely to the everyday struggles of our community. With the continuous increase in fuel prices and the growing difficulty for commuters to find rides home, we knew we had to act quickly. This campaign was born out of a desire to help ease that burden, even in a small way,” Patricia Domingo, Mogu Mogu’s Country Marketing Division Manager, said in an email interview with Philstar.com.
As part of the program, Mogu Mogu began subsidizing the boundaries for the day of select jeepney drivers serving various routes in Metro Manila. They also covered the drivers’ gas expenses for the week and provided them with rice to immediately help support their daily needs.
As of this writing, around 30 jeepney drivers had been chosen as beneficiaries of the We Got Chew campaign. Three key routes were visited namely, Pasig-Quiapo, Morayta-Gastambide-Divisoria and UP-Katipunan.
Both Mancilla and Diptas from the Pasig-Quiapo routes received the aid from Mogu Mogu, along with fellow driver Christopher Delacion who expressed gratitude for their drivers and operators’ association.
He said, “Malaking tulong sa amin to kasi at least kahit papaano naka-recover kami, kahit ilang araw lang.”
Meanwhile, Reb Retana, a driver from the Morayta-Gastambide-Divisoria route, expressed, “Nahihirapan kami sa hindi pa pagbaba ng diesel. Hindi pa rin bumabalik yung dating presyo ng diesel. Buti nga merong Mogu Mogu na sumuporta sa amin. Ramdam ni Mogu Mogu ang krisis ng mga driver,”
“Salamat talaga sa project ni Mogu Mogu, sa binigay nya sa amin sa ruta ng Morayta-Gastambide-Divisoria,” he added.
Libreng sakay and more surprises
The good vibes didn’t end with the financial aid as the We Got Chew jeepneys also became a shared spaces where passengers received surprises from Mogu Mogu: free rides and free drinks.
“The mechanics were intentionally kept simple. Anyone in need of a ride could hop on and enjoy a free trip, along with complimentary Mogu Mogu drinks,” Domingo shared.
She continued, “We are able to create shared moments where both drivers and passengers can skip the heat and daily pressures, even for a short while.”

Passengers who rode the We Got Chew jeepney were in for a refreshing treat with the newest Mogu Mogu Chewlit in 220ml size. Not only did they get to save on fares, but they were also able to quench their thirst and enjoy a drink that filled them up.
Mogu Mogu also gave out small prizes to passengers, adding a little fun to their otherwise unbearably hot commute.
“‘Yong libreng pasakay, napakalaking tulong non sa mga tao na katulad namin, mga estudyante, saka kunyari maaring nagtitipid dahil naubos na yong pamasahe nila yong pamasahe tumaas na rin dahil sa pagtaas ng gasolina,” said passenger Mike (not his real name).
“Nakakatuwa na ginagawa ng Mogu Mogu ‘to kasi maganda syang refreshment sa mga pasahero na naiinitan,” Mike said adding that Mogu Mogu is his favorite snackable drink with plenty of flavors to choose from such as Coconut, Strawberry and Lychee.
For Retana, he wished that Mogu Mogu would continue to spread the good vibes and refreshing moments from We Got Chew campaign.
“Mogu Mogu, sana marami ka pang matulungan na tsuper na kagaya namin dito sa Morayta Gastambide. Sana buong Maynila o buong bansa malibot mo ‘yong libreng sakay na may libreng Mogu Mogu pa!” he said.
To this, Domingo assured, ‘We Got Chew reflects our commitment to show up for our consumers when they need it most, offering small moments of relief, comfort and care. We are hopeful about expanding to more locations and reaching even more members of the PUV community.
“We want to bring people home safely, with a little more ease and a reason to smile. Because in life, when you gotta chew, we got chew.”
