MANILA, Philippines — It is only natural for parents to want the best for their children. For your kids to become better and healthier, ensuring their proper nutrition should be one of your main concerns.

However, undernutrition remains to be a widespread problem for many Filipino children. In the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipinos developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology, one out of three Filipino children aged five to 10 years old is suffering from stunted growth or lack of height for their age.

The survey also states that a third of children aged five to 10 years old are underweight or lacks weight for their age.

According to the World Health Organization, stunted children have low height-for-age. Stunted growth also refers to the failure to reach one’s full potential for growth. Meanwhile, underweight children are those with low weight-for-age.

One of the various reasons why these kids suffer from these health issues is that of poor nutrition.

Given this, meeting the kids’ recommended height and weight is more important than most people think, with stunted growth alone posing a greater risk for illness and even premature death.

Don’t be disheartened when your child is stunted or is underweight. Addressing stunted growth and weight problems is not impossible. Here are several ways to help your kid be healthy:

1. Monitor their height and weight.

With the help of a pediatrician or nutritionist, you will be better informed on how to track their nutritional intake, as well as if any fluctuations or gains in height or weight are normal.

However, if you’re unable to consult with a physician, you can still monitor the right height and weight for your children’s ages by referring to the FNRI’s Child Growth Standards.

2. Catch those ZZZ’s.

Let them get enough sleep with minimum of 8 hours every day. Sleep is also crucial to their growth because growth hormones are secreted during deep sleep. Best of all, you won’t have to deal with cranky and moody kids if they are well rested.

3. Serve them nutritious meals.

A well-balanced meal is key to helping your kid reach their right height and right weight. Make sure they get their daily dose of Vitamin D, which helps for Calcium absorption, Calcium which helps for healthy development of bones and teeth, Protein which helps for muscle growth and development and Iron which helps for efficient red blood cells production.
