UFC Fighter Donald Cerone headlines âFight Night 132â
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is not only one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, he is also the busiest.

A huge fan favorite, Cowboy already has 20 wins in the Octagon, tied with only two others: Michael Bisping and the legendary George St. Pierre.

He was in the country to promote UFC’s latest foray in Southeast Asia as he headlines “Fight Night 132” on June 23 in Singapore, with a clash with Leon Edwards.

Philippine STAR was given an exclusive interview with the welterweight fighter.

Philippine STAR: Welcome to the Philippines. Are you ready for your upcoming fight?

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone: I’m super excited about my upcoming fight in Singapore on June 23 with Leon Edwards. An up-and-coming guy, very hungry, over zealous, but nevertheless, he’s coming hard and coming fast.

What are your expectations for the fight?

I’m just excited about the crowd. You know that the Asian market is kind of new so I’m not sure how UFC-savvy Singaporean guests are. So we’ll go out there, blow the roof off and show them what they’ve been missing.

Would you rather be fighting in the US or abroad?
I love traveling but fighting in the US is good because I’m an American Cowboy. It’s an easy sell there.

Why do you always try to stay in shape?

I’m always in shape because last-minute fights always come in and happen. You don’t have to get ready if you’re always ready.

Do you consider peaks and valleys during your training?

Yeah. Maybe I’m always at the peak or I’m always in the valley. (Laughs) I don’t know which one it is, but I always try to balance it.

Go through your training regimen for us.

I have two or three different sessions a day, four or five days a week, depending on how my body feels. If I want take a break, it all depends.

Looking back, what do you consider as your toughest fight?

My toughest fight is my fight with myself — when I’m trying to get ready, to get motivated. Trying to battle my own mind is definitely the worst.

What’s your advice to kids who dream of becoming MMA fighters?

Don’t do it! Stay away! Get a real job. Be a good football player, or a baseball player. Have a retirement, a career. Don’t be like “Cowboy,” 36 years old and broke! (Laughs)
