WATCH: WHO raises awareness of 'Black Dog' depression
MANILA, Philippines - October 10 is observed as World Mental Health Day every year to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world.
"The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide," the World Health Organization (WHO), said.
In October 2012, WHO released a video titled "I had a black dog, his name was depression" which relates depression to a black dog. Last September, another video titled "Living With a Black Dog" was released as a follow-up for the first depression awareness video. The two videos were produced by writer and illustrator Matthew Johnstone in collaboration with WHO to mark World Mental Health Day.
"Depression is sometimes referred to as the 'Black Dog'. Just like a real dog, it needs to be embraced, understood, taught new tricks, and ultimately brought to heel," the opening statement of the second "Black Dog" video, said.
The videos serve as guides for partners, carers and sufferers of depression themselves.
