MANILA, Philippines - While pale skin was once coveted by many to indicate a lifestyle of privilege and ease, the tables have been turned so that there is now a predilection for tanned, sun-kissed skin. “I had the luxury of a vacation in the beach,” the tan lines seem to say. So notwithstanding that a suntan is actually an indication of skin injury caused by ultraviolet rays, more people venture outdoors for more fun in the sun.

Fortunately, increased awareness of the danger of skin cancer has made the public see the need for effective sun blocks.

There are two types of ultraviolet rays from the sun -- ultraviolet A (long wave) and ultraviolet B (short wave.) Dermatologists recommend that broad- spectrum sunscreens with sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more are most effective against both.

But while the sunscreens can prevent sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer, a good rule of thumb is to seek shade when your shadow is shorter than you are. This is a sign that the sun is at its most intense.  Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants and a wide-brimmed hat might also be a good idea to avoid sunburn. Do not forget to wear your sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun because cataracts and age-related macular degeneration have been linked to ultraviolet rays.

But since summer is always associated with happy times on the beach, it would be a bit absurd to cover up that fit, fabulous body that you worked so hard to achieve. Certainly, it will be a pity if the pretty pieces created by swimwear designer Charina Sarte are concealed underneath a nondescript swath of fabric. Thus, the designer also made fashionable wraps for the beach. The swimwear line was revealed at Nivea’s Summer Sun Kick-Off party.

Inspiration for the collection was derived from the tropics, and came in the blue, orange, and yellow colors of Nivea Sun. The fashionable swimwear collection is available at Charina’s Greenbelt 5 boutique.

Nivea has been one of the most recognized and trusted skincare brands since 1911, the year Nivea Creme was born. Nivea Sun, the world’s number one sun care brand, offers reliable and nourishing sun protection products that help us enjoy summer. A favorite product is Nivea Sun Invisible Protection, a non-greasy, transparent spray that nonetheless offers immediate and effective protection.

“Nivea resonates strongly with many people,” says Beiersdorf Philippines country manager Marcelo Biasia. He explains that many would associate the smell of Nivea products with good memories. As one of the internationally leading companies for skincare, the company offers “compelling, innovative products and brands that enjoy universal trust.”

Recently, Nivea Philippines partnered with the Department of Tourism to promote the Philippines’ summer destinations through a “7 Wonders Poll” that is inspired by the worldwide New7Wonders poll where Palawan’s Underground River made it to the list. By clicking “like” on the Nivea Philippines Facebook page and then clicking the Nivea 7 Summer Wonders tab, one can fill out an entry form, nominate and vote for his chosen destination. Voting ends on April 15 at 11:59 p.m.

“But I realize that fun in the Philippines is more than sun or summer,” continues Marcelo Biasia. “There is a proverb that says ‘A life without love is like a year without summer.’ In the Philippines, the warmth of the people makes it summer whatever the season.”
