The Important Philippine Art sale, the marquee event of the country’s only internationally-recognized auction house, once again delivers a meticulously assembled selection of paintings, watercolors, original fine prints, and sculpture.

Notable for its offering of works by old Philippine masters, this sale promises to delight the serious art collectors with the discovery by Salcedo Auctions advisor Ramon E.S. Lerma of Juan Luna y Novicio’s A Farm House, an oil on wood depicting a Normandy country scene from the 1890s, whose whereabouts for nearly a century had been unknown, the only proof of its existence having been a photograph from the Luis Araneta collection, which was reproduced in the seminal book on the artist published by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation in 1980.

The painting, striking for the intensity of its cobalt yellow and viridian pigments, was brought to the auction house earlier this year, where it was learned that it had formerly belonged to the estate of a friend of Luna and the National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Another painting that had once belonged to the estate, a rare 1919 Fabian dela Rosa landscape, is also being offered in this auction.

Other highlights of the sale include A Young Nation, oil on canvas by the academic master Jorge Pineda, which was inspired by the inauguration of the Philippine Commonwealth in 1935. There has been increased interest in the works of Pineda, whose Philippine Lanterns was sold last September througb Salcedo for a world record price of Php 9,440,000. Among the modern masters, three key works by National Artist Vicente Manansala are featured: an iconic 1963 Man with Rooster; Still Life (Sinigang) dated 1966; and a rare 1972 Manila Street Scene.

Preview for both auctions starts on Saturday, February 14. A printed catalogue is available. View the catalogue online at salcedoauctions.com
