Doing our country proud

my LIPS are SEALED… sometimes… - Maurice Arcache -
It isn’t everyday, dahlings, that His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain bestows the prestigious Gran Cruz de la Orden de Merito Civil to deserving personas who have done their best to promote relations with Spain, dahlings. So it was truly a fantastic red-letter day when el muy simpatico and dedicated former Ambassador Jose Zarate Oledan was conferred this honor.

Since the Gran Cruz can only be conferred by the reigning Spanish monarch, it is a great honor that our very own Ambassador Oledan has received this most coveted title.

Tres
dashing and dynamic Spanish Ambassador Tomas Rodriguez Pantoja represented His Majesty. The Spanish Ambassador’s sprawling home became the venue of this once in a lifetime event a new moon ago. The ceremony was attended by the chosen few belonging to Cosmo Manille’s alta sociedad.

The tres chic guests who arrived in full force, naturellement, included the well-loved Oledan famille led by the Grand Dame of the Gem Brigade, one of the country’s most respected jewelers, that flawless gem of a woman who cares for the less fortunate, Liding Oledan.

Joining Liding O. were stylish woman of substance Linda Oledan who was Ambassador Oledan’s right hand during his tour of duty in fabi Madrid. Boy Oledan jetted in from San Francisco to participate in the memorable occasion. Moi zoomed in on handsome Ric Oledan in a huddle with his workaholic brother Gabby O. of Jaguar cars and Jojo O. of BMW.

Statuesque Tess Oledan-Liptavat jetted in from Bangkok where she resides with her top-notch businessman hubby. As usual, she was the life of the affair. Also seen were witty Pinky Oledan, tres fab Anna Oledan-Rodriguez, and the Department of Tourism’s tres charmante asset, brilliant royalette Carissa Oledan Coscolluela.

Among the select A-list personas invited by the Spanish Embassy and the Oledan famille were civic worker and astute businesswoman Chito Madrigal Collantes and her husband, Manoling C.; vivacious Zita Feliciano and good looking Mundy F.; super power couple, Ising and Danny Vasquez; well-loved Justa and Mon Tantoco; mega magnate P.L. Lim; former Ambassador to Spain Johnny Rocha; the newly appointed Ambassador to Spain, Lani Bernardo and his adorable wife, Conchita Sevilla B.

Everyone was moved when Ambassador Pantoja praised Ambassador Oledan for being one of the "true patriots who work tirelessly to promote Philippine-Spanish relations. Ambassador Oledan took the diplomatic community by storm with his energetic and dynamic leadership of several commissions based in Spain. His kindness and work ethic were truly an asset to Philippine foreign service." The Ambassador’s remarks were received with hearty applause, dahlings.

A few nights apres the ceremony, the Oledans held a reception at their fantastic Forbes Park home to celebrate with famille pals and some very nice personas who helped Ambassador Oledan while he was in Spain.

Among the namedroppables seen were the Oledans’ close pals and neighbors in the United States, Tochi and Britta Quisumbing of Norkis fame; Ambassador Manuel Yan and his gracious wife Eloy Y.; Ambassador Klaus Zeller and regal Pinky del Rosario Z.; magnum industrial magnate Tony Madrigal with the chic Mandy M. on a rare night out; Davao’s King of Kings, Don Antonio Floirendo with his daughters, vivacious photographer Marissa F. and feminine Mariciris F.; sophisticated socialite Letty vda. de Santos; Aurora Lebrum; Pepito and Chloe Periquet; vibrant Tereret Tambunting Liboro; plus so many others like them too elegant to mention, palanggas.

Needles to say, the excellent dinner menu was as scrumptuous as it always is in Liding O.’s home, she being one of Manilla’s most gracious hostesses. Her house was bedecked in beautiful fresh flowers and illuminated by gorgeous Tivoli lights.

The greatest points of interest among the guests were the beautifully framed "Grand Cruz de la Orden de Merito Civil", and the personally dedicated photos to Ambassador Oledan and his wife from the King and Queen of Spain.

It’s wonderful how a mere two years was enough to make the royal famille of Spain and the Oledans become the closest of friends.

To Ambassador Jose Oledan, you have truly made our country proud! Bravo, Sir!
Marivic unveils her Dreamscapes
You’d think it was a baptism or a debut during the opening of woman of substance, style and creativity Marivic "Mav" Rufino’s Dreamscapes 2001: Inner Vision at the chic-ky Gallery of the Peninsula Manila Hotel in Makati, half a full moon ago, dahlings.

Marivic R.’s pals and fans flocked to view all 31 of her works on paper and four "soft art" pieces which included an eye-catching three-panel screen divider called Afterglow.

Marivic R.’s twelfth show marked her debut as a mixed media artist. For the exhibit, Marivic mixed her trademark watercolor with acrylic.

The exhibit featured Marivic R.’s favorite theme, Dreamscapes of Nature, for which she used acrylic and watercolor.

Marivic R. said, "I have a series of seascapes at sunsets as well as impressions and memories of Provence and Tuscany. Because I was trained in Chinese brush painting, I paint from memory. My colors are Western but the feeling is Oriental." Which explains why some of her paintings are entitled Rhapsody in Provence, Tuscan Reverie and Ode to the Sunset (Tali Beach and Punta Fuego.

"Painting is my way of expressing myself and communicating my love of nature which is a lifetime passion," she added. "There is so much pain and anger that I’d rather see beauty in the world and paint the serenity I feel!"

Marivic R. has certainly come a long way in nurturing the artist in her, palanggas. She recalled wanting to become a painter when she was a little girl. She said, "Despite parental objections, I struggled to take private painting lessons over the years. I was always involved with art – as a painter, producer and writer. For pragmatic reasons, I have always worked in business to support my art."

Her life as a career woman, she says, is "extremely busy". Aside from writing a weekly column for a broadsheet, she is the treasurer/director of her famille’s real estate corporation. She is also the executive director/trustee of the PLDT, Fort Bonifacio Development Corp. and Metro Pacific foundations, and the vice president/director of Alliance Francaise de Manille. Now, dahlings, how busy can one get? This gal also manages to be a success in in all she does.

"I never have the luxury of working a full day as an artist," Marivic sighed. On Sunday afternoons, apres coming home from the beach, this fashionable grandmother of three shuts out the world to paint and write and sometimes to cram everything she has to do. All her pent-up energy and passion go into a painting or several works simultaneously.

"When I paint, I feel transformed. Whenever I open an exhibition, I am validated," Marivic added.

Despite the fact that it was her twelfth exhibit, Marivic confessed, "I do get a little nervous, too. It’s a debut all over again and I have the usual stage fright!"

Proceeds of Marivic’s successful show will benefit the St. Mary’s House for Young Girls in Tagaytay City and Serra’s Center for Girls in Pasay City. Not bad, huh? Not bad at all, palanggas.

A unique honor for Ambassador Oledan and a successful exhibit from Marivic Rufino, two personas we can be proud of.

See you, palanggas.
