Gantimpala Theater announces summer workshops and 38th theater season

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - “After being the resident theater company of the historic Rizal Park for a decade, Gantimpala Theater kicks off its 38th season in our new home, the AFP Theater,” chairman and president Jun Pablo announced.

The 38th season officially begins with the annual Gantimpala Theater Summer Workshops. These workshops have been a tradition for the dramatic arts company since their days as Bulwagang Gantimpala at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the Tanghalang Huseng Batute as its original home.

From April 6 to May 2, musical theater courses are open for kids, teens and advanced/professional. In these workshops, participants will learn about acting, singing, dancing, techniques and professional practices needed by an actor and actress for a musical theater production.

Singer and comedienne Kakai Bautista, actors Marcus Madrigal, Ketchup Eusebio, chef and actress, China Cojuangco, TV news personality Valerie Tan, actor Migui Moreno, heartthrobs and Kampamilya talents Jose Sarrasola and Ivan Dorschner are some of the well-known entertainment personalites who became part of the GT Summer Workshop.

Resident directors, URIAN Awards nominnee and ALIW Awards Best Actor winner Roeder Camañag, director, librettist and costume/set designer Jose Jeffrey Camañag, and director and playwright Gean All de Leon will be the facilitators.

Tuition is P6,000. Enrollment is ongoing.

A two-week stage management workshop is also being offered. Ed Murillo, the Philippines’ foremost stage manager, will be the instructor.

Pablo talks about GT’s 38th theater season: “It promises to be very exciting one. We present Kanser, the longest-running play of Gantimpala Theater gets an artistic make over as a musical theater production. We have a new book and libretto. The musical compositions are divine and yes, the cast of big name stars will perform with a live orchestra in Kanser @ 35, the musical. Florante at Laura, we present it as a komedya, the prevailing and most popular theater form during the time of Francisco Balagatas. Ibong Adarna remains faithful to itscorrido origins but we made it more vibrant and electrifying as dances from Muslim cultural communities are used to highlight the quest of Don Juan. El Filibusterismo highlights the dark elements of the novel with flashback scenes that allow audiences to have a better understanding of the intentions of Dr. Jose Rizal. Speaking of our national hero, his short story El Consejos de Los Dioses is now a touring musical theater production billed Paraisong Kayumanggi.
