Ballet Manila stages `Le Corsaire’ pirate adventure

(The Philippine Star) - September 30, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - After its successful staging of Tatlo Pang Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, Ballet Manila continues its 18th performance season with the full-length pirate adventure on pointes, Le Corsaire.

Presented by the Manila Broadcasting Company and Star City, Le Corsaire goes onstage on Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m.; and on Oct. 5 and 6, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

Prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde leads Ballet Manila in a production that combines swashbuckling heroes, damsels in distress and buried treasure. Saying goodbye to the role of Medora, she will be dancing in the opening gala on Oct. 4 and on Oct. 6, 3 p.m., with the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of international guest conductor Alexander Vikulov.

BM co-artistic director Osias Barroso describes Le Corsaire as a show-off piece where the five principal characters are able to highlight “pyrotechnical” dancing. “They share the limelight in several grande pas de deux, pas de trois and extremely demanding solo variations. It also gives ample opportunity for the male leads to show off their technique and strength,” Barroso.

“Le Corsaire is really a man’s ballet and this rarely happens,” Macuja-Elizalde points out. “There are four male lead characters that make for lots of testosterone-filled leaping and turning onstage. Between the pirate Conrad, his trusted slave Ali, the bad guy Lankadem and the comrade-at-arms turned traitor Birbanto, expect fireworks and fierce choreographic duels onstage!”

Aside from Macuja-Elizalde, taking on the lead roles are: Dawna Mangahas, Mylene Aggabao; Rudy De Dios, Harold Salgado, Junmark Sumaylo (Conrad); Gerardo Francisco, Elpidio Magat, Michael Divinagracia (Ali); Joan Emery Sia, Jan Erika Basilio, Tiffany Chiang, Abigail Oliveiro; Alfren Salgado, Romeo Peralta, Glenn Ragel (Lankadem); Francis Cascaño, Francis Jaena and Arnulfo Andrade (Birbanto).

Le Corsaire is set to the music of Ricardo Drigo, Adolphe Adam, Cesar Pugni, Leo Debiles and Prince Oldenbourg, with choreography by Marius Petipa as restaged by Natalia Raldugina and Osias Barroso.

Ballet Manila first staged the full-length Le Corsaire in a joint performance with the Krasnoyarsk Ballet in 1997 in the Philippines. The latest production is sponsored by First United Travel, Ralph’s Wines and Spirits, Island Rose, Pride Powder and Seair.

Tickets for the Oct. 4 and 6 shows, both with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, are available at Ticketworld. For inquiries, call Ballet Manila at 525-5967 or 400-0292 or Ticketworld at 891-9999 or ticketworld.com.ph.
