Spanish animated films at Instituto Cervantes

MANILA, Philippines - Instituto Cervantes, the cultural arm of the Spanish Embassy, is showing a film cycle on animated treasures this July that bring new worlds and imaginary creatures to life.

The film cycle was inaugurated with Chico y Rita, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 84th Academy Awards, the first time that a Spanish full-length animated film is nominated.

Spanish graphic novelist Miguelanxo Prado turns to animation with De Profundis, a deceptively simple and lyrical labor of love about freedom, passion and loss. Screening on July 21, De Profundis is based on the idea of the deep ocean life, discovering its exciting beauty and mysteries combined with the artist’s imagination inherited from his life experiences.

Showing on July 28 is Adrian Garcia and Victor Maldonado’s charming animated fare Nocturna. Set within an orphanage and centered on young Tim, the film begins with that universal child’s phenomenon: the fear of the dark. Afraid of the dark but enamored of the stars, Tim finds himself exploring the world of the night with his new friend, the cat Shepard, to find out why.

The films, in Spanish with English subtitles, will screen on the last two Saturdays of the month at 2 p.m. at Instituto Cervantes’ Salon de Actos.

 Admission to the screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
