Instituto Cervantes presents Tómas Calvillo's poetry book

-

MANILA, Philippines - Spanish cultural center Instituto Cervantes de Manila launches the Spanish poetry book of historian and poet Tómas Calvillo titled “Filipinas, textos cercanos” on Sept. 8, 7 p.m. at Instituto Cervantes’ Salon de Actos.

Written during Calvillo’s first year of service as Ambassador of Mexico to the Philippines, Filipinas, textos cercanos conveys the will to communicate with the reader through poetry.

And while the title of his book makes clear reference to one of the biggest archipelagos in the world, its content transcends any geographical limitation. Calvillo’s latest poetical achievement resides in its capacity to take the reader beyond the limitations of intellectual reasoning and into the intricate world of poetic exploration.

Born in Mexico City in 1955, the Mexican Ambassador studied International Relations at the College of Mexico and finished his doctorate in Social Sciences with specialization in History at the University of Guadalajara and Western CIESAS. He was also the founder and president of El Colegio de San Luis. Among his published works include Poesía 1979-1993, El fondo de las cosas, Epistolario de Angelina and Palabra que es la dignidad.

For his latest book launching on September 8, there will be a poetry recital and a brief lecture on the book. Philippine National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera will also grace the event and will do a succinct introduction of Calvillo.

Entrance to this book launch is free. For information, call 526-1482 or visit http://manila.cervantes.es. Instituto Cervantes de Manila is at 855 T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila.
