FDCP launches essay-writing contest on 'Emir'

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is launching an essay-writing contest in line with the showing of its movie Emir. Produced by the FDCP, in association with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and with the generous support of the President’s Social Fund, Emir is the biggest original Filipino musical ever to be made. The contest is done in cooperation with the DepEd and CHEd and is open to all students (grades 4 to 7, high school and college).

Contest mechanics are as follows:

For grade school students, write a 200-word essay answering the question “What did you learn about OFWs in the movie?” For high school students, write a 700-word paper on how the movie helps promote the heroism and dignity of OFWs, thereby giving them a better, more positive image. For college students, write a 1,000-word critique focusing on how the movie relates to the adage, “The hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world. What implications about Filipino society does the movie present?”

The competition is open to all public and private school students. Essays can either be in Filipino or English and submitted in MSWord format (12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 Spacing, Justified). Each competing school, through the principal/headmaster/dean or duly appointed representative/s, must narrow down their students’ entries to the top five. Only five or less can be submitted electronically (one e-mail per student). A contestant must submit, along with his/her entry, scanned copies of the student’s ID, and an endorsement letter from the principal/headmaster/dean. Only the first five entries from each school, with accompanying endorsement letters, will be recognized. Employees of the FDCP and CCP as well as their relatives by blood or law up until the second degree of consanguinity are disqualified from joining the contest. Winners will need a valid ID to claim their prizes at the FDCP office, 20th floor, Centerpoint Bldg., Julia Vargas Ave. corner Garnet Road, Pasig City, MM. Representatives will need a letter of authority from the winning student, the student’s valid school ID, and his own valid ID with picture to claim a student’s prize.

Entries are to be submitted via e-mail to fdcpemirgshs@yahoo.com for grade school and high school students; and fdcpemircollege@yahoo.com for college students. Please put in the subject line “ENTRY [school] [last name] [first name] [middle name]”. An automatic reply will be sent once the entry is received.

Deadline for entries is on June 25. Winners will be announced on July 16.
