Tanghalang Ateneo stages 'Walang Sugat'

-

MANILA, Philippines - Although playwright Severino Reyes’ and composer Fulgencio Tolentino’s Walang Sugat was first staged more than a century ago in 1902, its notion of love has stood the test of time, ringing true even to today’s audiences.

Ateneo de Manila University brings to life these age-old nuggets of wisdom in the well-loved sarsuwela from Feb. 24 to 27, 7 p.m., and Feb. 27, 2 p.m., at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater, Ateneo Loyola Heights campus. Ticket price is P250.

The production is directed by Ricardo Abad with musical direction by Josefino Tolledo. Jonjon Villareal handles lights design while Dexter Santos choreographs. Set and costumes were designed by National Artist Salvador Bernal.

Tanghalang Ateneo’s production of Walang Sugat falls under Ateneo’s sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary. Part of the proceeds of the play will benefit Ateneo’s 500@150, the university’s campaign for 500 scholarships.

On Feb. 28, the presentation will be sponsored by the Roco Foundation Inc., which encourages the youth in initiating meaningful cultural and socio-economic endeavors in the late Senator Raul Roco’s birth province. Roco’s widow, Sonia — having taken up a dramatics course in London — will take the lead in the play on that night.
