MANILA, Philippines —  Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and her family are "delighted" at the birth of a daughter to her grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Buckingham Palace said in a statement Sunday.

"The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex," a palace spokeswoman said.

Meghan gave birth last Friday at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. The baby girl was named Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, after Queen Elizabeth and Harry's late mother, Princess Diana.

The couple’s first child Archie was born in 2019.

The choice to use Lilibet, the 95-year-old British monarch's nickname, is a tribute after a year of dispute between the couple and the royal family fueled by Meghan and Harry's controversial Oprah interview.

Prince William and his wife Princess Kate tweeted: “We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.” — Deni Rose M. Afinidad-Bernardo, with reports from Agence France-Presse
