MANILA, Philippines — Summer is fading and that means kids are in for another year of striving for greatness as they go back to school.

There is no denying that two decades of learning in school is essential for the next four decades of someone’s life. Now that it is back to school again, why not put some colors and fun for this school year?

The start of school calls for a great first impression — and here some stuff that can help you get that quintessential first-day-high look.

'90-inspired chunky shoes

Apart from having new set of clothes, a stylish, comfortable, and durable pair of shoes is equally important especially since you will be standing, walking and commuting a lot the entire year—hopping from one class to another, from campus to your hangout spots, to and from home.

For the ladies, the Skechers Bikers is a pair of standard black leather shoes but made with Memory Foam insole for comfort and cushioning. Meanwhile, there is the Lanson for guys, a full-grain leather shoe and oxford pair designed with air-cooled memory foam. For gym-to-class shoes, there is Go Run Mojo, a lightweight trainer with the 5GEN midsole for shock absorption. Meanwhile, the Street Moda sports a leather upper with metallic overlays and rhinestone accents.

In time for the back-to-school season, the brand also reintroduces its iconic ‘90s shoes, D’lites, made famous by ‘90s pop star Britney Spears. Energy, as it was previously known, was the original chunky monkey sneaker of the ‘90s to early 2000’s. A cult-fashion item turned worldwide sensation when the pop princess wore it, these kicks were established as one of the most iconic and nostalgic shoes of an entire generation.

A couple of years on, trends shifted to smaller, sleeker styles. But when “athleisure” became a thing and sloppy casual dressing became the new normal, chunky sneakers are back. To celebrate this comeback, the brand has partnered with retail store The Nines at the 2nd floor of Uptown Mall in BGC for its “Retro Renegade” campaign that showcases and merges various styles, from street, to chic, to high fashion, to punk and defiant. The campaign was further realized through a digital lookbook that presents limited women’s apparel pieces from Champion, Thrasher, Pas de Mer, and The Hundreds x Carrots by Anwar Carrots.

Like chunky shoes, street wear runners like Saucony’s new Liteform Series have become a trend. The Boston-based running and lifestyle brand introduces a new range of athletic kicks with lightweight uppers and flexible cushioned outsoles for all-day comfort and style. The shoes can be used in the brand’s fitness tour in partnership with 360 Fitness. The tour is free and is open to the public in all Saturdays of June by registering to the brand’s Philippine website.

Education is not only learning from the four corners of the classroom. Besides, kids’ imaginations and learning should not be restricted in tight spaces where they can wander, wonder and play, equipped with the right gear that can take them places.

The Playground Store hopes to be all that and more, providing shoes and accessories for children in a space where they can interact, make memories and have fun. Encouraging #RealPlay, the store features brands from all over the world that encourage activity and creativity by pieces designed especially for children. The store is the official retailer of well-loved kids’ brands Mini Melissa, Mel, Salt-Water Sandal Kids, and Bibi. The store recently opened a new branch in Robinsons Magnolia.

Public places such as airports and train stations can be overwhelming at times where you will find yourself wanting to zone out and block all the unnecessary noise. The Moshi Vortex Air is a pair of Bluetooth-enabled wireless earbuds with magnetic shirt clip affixes and a built in microphone for wireless entertainment and for answering calls.

To stay hydrated in school, Hydrapak Stow 1L aims to eliminate the trouble of bringing plastic bottled waters or stainless water containers as it can be rolled when empty and can be stowed inside one’s bag.

‘60s Bohemian

If you are on a hunt for something that will make you look subtly sexy during the day and glam and glitzy for after-hour cocktails, you can find day-to-evening ensembles from Designers at Debenhams brand Star by Julien Macdonald. If sophisticated, feminine, and soft day wear is your cup of tea, then you can try John Rocha. For men, Racing Green is a classic British menswear with a summer collection boasting of Dixon Chino with cotton twill, which is lightly brushed for a luxurious finish; and the classic button-down Oxford shirt with trim and embroidery details.

One can find cute pieces for the little ones this season at Bluezoo, a children’s brand that offers clothing for kids from zero to 14 years old. For special occasions, the brand Jasper Conran offers a sophisticated range of smart casual and special pieces.

Re-visiting the brand’s heritage and love of music, Ben Sherman’s spring /summer 2018 collection takes inspiration from the Bohemian and psychedelic movements of the 1960’s. Embracing the effortless style and flamboyance of the 1960’s “Peacocks,” a moniker given to men who pioneered a distinct and colorful dress sense, the collection sees traditional patterns given a contemporary twist for the modern man.

The collection gives a nostalgic nod to the music and iconic festival posters of the ‘60s. There are patterns of florals, vintage, British and spring floral art patterns used throughout the collection and set against functional utility elements to balance the look.

Combining the embroidery and feminine trends, Prairie tops are ruling with floral detailing and ditsy prints that go with almost any of your favorite pair of jeans. It is the bohemian update your wardrobe needs and the perfect choice to bring out on sunny days whether you dress it up with trousers or relax in laid-back denim.

The future is wireless

Leading German audio specialist Sennheiser just culminated the local leg of its four-month Sennheiser Sound Heroes project, which followed a dozen audio creatives as they discovered new sound experiences. Their journeys produced an insightful first look at some tech, covering areas such as 3D binaural recording (AMBEO Smart Headset), mobile journalism (HandMic Digital), specialized audioforvideo (MKE 440), and many others.

In the end, musician/DJ Dannie Farmer and lifestyle purveyor Deegee Razon bested a pool of talent that included singers/actors Khalil Ramos and Jay Gonzaga; DJ Jazmin Reyes; bloggers Cha Ocampo, Rhea Bue, Issa Pressman, and Ira Denise Oyco; filmmaker Maqui Castelo; MC Marga Bermudez; and concert photographer Magic Liwanag.

Dannie and Deegee’s novel approach to the sound journey earned them a trip to the company’s German headquarters and flagship store.

Locally, the brand also launched the Sound Forum—a series of sustained educational initiatives in the field of audio technology. The inaugural edition, also held at the Nielson Tower, covered topics such as consumer trends, the gaming industry, and even 3D audio. More sessions are planned later this year.

Keep a ‘cool’ head

Summer is all about fun and excitement. It is the best time to enjoy your days outdoors, book a trip to the beach, and take a refreshing dip in the cool waters as you soak up the warm sunshine. Nonetheless, summer is also the peak season when people become more prone to itching and dandruff. Moreover, the summer heat can be harsh to your scalp and even cause excessive sweating, which leaves you feeling irritable and uncool.

Athletes Nico Bolzico, JeronTeng, and Kianna Dy; travelers An Estrada, En Estrada, Chie Filomeno, Janina Manipol, and Cha Ocampo; plus vloggers Michelle Dy and Haley Dasovich; all share a common secret to staying cool in this sizzling weather—they are proud Head & Shoulders ambassadors that swear by the limited edition summer variants that let them keep cool this season.

Made especially for those who want to keep things cool in the hot weather this summer, the brand introduces new variants Apple Fresh, Lemon Fresh, and Cool Menthol.

But of course, nothing can be “cooler” this back-to-school season than a head that is full of wisdom and readiness for school.
