An official says joint police operatives and the Bureau of Customs seized P36.7 million worth of smuggled cigarettes from a warehouse in a village in Zamboanga City.

Col. Alexander Lorenzo, newly installed Zamboanga City Police Office director, says his personnel were conducting a follow-up investigation on a shooting incident that transpired Monday night when they noticed an unattended warehouse containing several master cases of cigarettes.

Lorenzo says they immediately coordinated with the BOC and conducted the inspection that led to the discovery of 1,038 master cases of assorted brands of smuggled cigarettes worth P36.3 million. — The STAR/Roel Pareño

Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat says the government's “Pharmacy and Drive-thru Vaccination Sites” program would help in the eventual reopening of the Philippines by ensuring that tourism workers and tourists are protected against COVID-19.

“Now that we are battling an Omicron surge, we are trying to get ahead of it outside NCR by making booster shots as convenient as possible for everyone. There is no longer a need to join a long queue at a centralized vaccination site. Just come by the participating pharmacies like Watsons or Mercury Drugstore and get a free booster shot while you buy your necessities,” Puyat says.

“We look forward to seeing this initiative implemented in other parts of the country in the coming weeks,” she adds.

President Joe Biden's administration formally withdraws the COVID vaccination-or-testing mandate for large businesses that was struck down by the Supreme Court.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) said that although it was withdrawing the mandate it "strongly encourages vaccination of workers against the continuing dangers posed by Covid-19 in the workplace."

The conservative-dominated Supreme Court delivered a blow to Biden this month when it blocked his vaccination-or-testing mandate for businesses with 100 employees or more.

The murders of two journalists in the Mexican border city of Tijuana in less than a week have triggered calls for the government to step up protection of media workers.

The killings of photographer Margarito Martinez and reporter Lourdes Maldonado have sparked outcry among colleagues in what is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists.

Reporters organized protests on Tuesday in cities across the country, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Mexico to take tougher action.

"We call on Mexican authorities to strengthen the protection of journalists, in particular, to take further steps to prevent attacks on them, including by tackling threats and slurs aimed at them," said Guterres's spokesman Stephane Dujarric. — AFP
