The Delta variant remains dominant and experts, governments and vaccine makers are urging people to take advantage of booster jabs where they are available.

Delta has proved able to evade vaccine defences against transmission better than the Alpha, Beta and Gamma COVID-19 variants.

But jabs have remained highly effective at preventing severe illness from Delta, lowering the risk of overwhelming hospital resources. — AFP

The new Omicron variant of COVID-19 could slow the global economic recovery, just as the Delta strain did, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva says.

"A new variant that may spread very rapidly can dent confidence and in that sense, we are likely to see some downgrades of our October projections for global growth," she says at a Reuters event.

In its most recent World Economic Outlook, the fund projected global growth of 5.9% this year and 4.9 percent in 2022, but the United States and other major economies suffered sharp downward revisions after the spread of the Delta variant "caused some friction," Georgieva says. — AFP

Authorities say more than 200 houses were razed when a big fire hit a densely populated barangay Saturday morning in Isabela City, Basilan.

The conflagration that occurred past 9 a.m. in Barangay Kampurna Zone 1 in the Port Area border resulted to more than 500 families being homeless, according to Isabela City Police chief  Lt. Col. Julpikar Sitin.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel are conducting investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire that rapidly spread and flattened the community.

A Canadian government immunization advisory committee urges COVID-19 booster shots for people 18 and older who are at greater risk of infection, while also strongly recommending those 50 years-plus to get the third jab.

The updated guidance comes after two provinces -- Ontario and Alberta, with half the population of Canada -- this week said they would start offering third jabs to people 50 and 60 years and over, respectively, and planned to further expand eligibility in the new year, amid concerns over the Omicron variant.

Eleven cases of the Omicron variant have so far been recorded in Canada, linked to travel abroad, public health officials say. — AFP
