PAGASA: Signal No. 1 up in some parts of Batanes, Northern Luzon due to ‘Salome’
MANILA, Philippines — Signal No. 1 has been raised over Batanes and parts of the Ilocos Region due to Tropical Depression “Salome,” according to the state weather bureau PAGASA.
As of 10 a.m., PAGASA reported that Salome was estimated to be 255 kilometers north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts reaching up to 70 kph. It is moving south-southwestward at 15 kph.
The following areas are in Signal No. 1:
- Batanes
- The western portion of the Babuyan Islands (Calayan Island, Dalupiri Island)
- Northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte (Bangui, Pagudpud, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City)
Areas under Signal No. 1 are advised to be alert within the next 36 hours for wind speeds of 39 to 61 kph, with a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Forecast track. Salome is expected to move southwestward and pass close to or make landfall over Batanes between tonight and early Thursday morning, October 23.
It may also pass close to or over the Babuyan Islands by tomorrow morning and reach Ilocos Norte by tomorrow afternoon, before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday afternoon or evening, October 24.
While the highest wind signal expected is Signal No. 1, PAGASA does not rule out the possibility of the cyclone intensifying into a Tropical Storm, which could lead to the hoisting of Signal No. 2 in a worst-case scenario.
Coastal hazards. A gale warning remains in effect for the seaboard of extreme Northern Luzon, making sea travel risky for all types of vessels in the area.
Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port or seek shelter immediately. Specific dangerous sea conditions include:
- Up to Very Rough Seas of up to 4.5 meters: The seaboard of Batanes.
- Up to Rough Seas of up to 4.0 meters: The seaboards of the Babuyan Islands.
Rough seas are also expected for the seaboards of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, the northern seaboard of mainland Cagayan and the western seaboards of Pangasinan.
Furthermore, the northeasterly windflow is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts today over the Ilocos Region and Cagayan, even in areas not under a signal warning.
