MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Army today received six upgraded armored personnel carriers (APCs) from the government of Turkey as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program.

In a ceremony at the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, Undersecretary for Finance and Armed Forces Modernization Affairs Antonio Romero II graced the turnover and commissioning rite of the upgraded APC M113, along with Ambassador Adnan Basaga of the Republic of Turkey to the Philippines and Army chief Lt. Gen. Delfin Bangit.

The acquisition project was programmed to increase equipment fill-up and operational readiness of Light Armor Division of the Philippine Army.

It aims to improve the operational readiness through an increased equipment fill-up of the Light Armor Units, and to extend its life cycle for another 15 years and improve its capabilities and performance in terms of mobility, firepower, communication, survivability and maintainability.

The APC M113 is envisioned to be an armored fighting vehicle, multi-purpose, armor-protected vehicle for ground operations and troop insertion.

The acquisition of the Upgraded APC M113 underwent a process of public bidding and the contract subsequently awarded to the FNSS Savunma Sistemleri, a Turkish company.

Bangit said the newly acquired vehicles would be deployed to priority areas in the country.
