Pasig school used to be a drug rehab center

MANILA, Philippines--The high school in Pasig City where the random drug testing on students was kicked off today used to be a drug rehabilitation center.

School officials and faculty members of the Manggahan High School said the property where the school now stands used to be a facility for treating drug dependents.

"There used to stand a drug rehabilitation center here called ANRRENN," the school personnel said.

However, for some reason, the operation of the center stopped and the private owner of the property donated it to the city government of Pasig in 1999.

In 2004, the local government started tearing down the origninal structures and began erecting school buildings, which now accommodate more than 3,000 students.

One faculty member even said that one time during the operation of the drug rehabilitation center in the mid-1990's, the staff had expected a famous action star to be one of their patients.

"It was the time when he was supposedly deep into illegal drug use," he said.

Earlier today, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus and Dangerous Drugs Board chairman Vicente Sotto III led the opening of the government's random drug testing at Manggahan HIgh School, where 15 students were pre-selected to undergo the testing.

Of the number of students, five served as a buffer if, anyone of the 10 is absent, officials said. The cost of the testing was shouldered by the Department of Health.

The education department will be testing around 85,000 high school students in  public and private high schools in the country.
