MANILA, Philippines — The government’s plan to accredit bloggers with high engagement and following to cover Malacañang events has been put on hold pending further studies, according to Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles.

This was revealed yesterday during the questioning of Camarines Sur 3rd district Rep. Gabriel Bordado Jr. when the House of Representatives deliberated on the proposed budget of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) for 2023, amounting to P473.17 million.

The OPS remains “open to the possibility of accrediting bloggers,” according to its budget sponsor, House committee on appropriations senior vice chair Marikina 2nd District Rep. Stella Luz Qiumbo.

At this point, however, Quimbo said the OPS is still studying the matter.

“In case they do decide to accredit bloggers, of course, it will be important to provide the necessary training,” she added.

Bordado asked how the OPS would safeguard the “truthfulness and fairness of information” in utilizing social media, which he described as “the breeding ground for fake news and misinformation.”

“There is also little to no checks and balances (being done by social media) to ensure the integrity of data,” he added.

In response, Quimbo underscored that the OPS is planning to implement a “unified messaging program within the executive branch” of the government.

“The problem is not the platform, but the content that goes into that platform. That’s why the OPS will make sure that there is only one messaging,” she said.

Quimbo said under the program, there will be “vetting” by the OPS before government agencies, for instance, come up with press statements.
