Go cites Pinoys for exercising right to vote

Paolo Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Bong Go cited yesterday Filipinos in the country and abroad who cast their votes in what he described as “among the longest, most grueling and most heated election seasons” in the Philippines amid an ongoing health crisis.

“I give credit to the Filipino people for showing and proving to the world that Philippine democracy is alive, well and flourishing despite all the difficulties and crises we have faced as a nation,” Go said in a statement.

He expressed hope that Filipinos were able to choose their leaders wisely even as he appealed to them to respect the results, support whoever the next leaders are and unite as one for the betterment of the country.

“The elections are done. Our countrymen have made their decision. Let’s respect the result as that is only proper, that in a democracy and in this kind of exercise, the voice of the majority must prevail,” Go said in Filipino.

“It really can’t be helped that some will win and some will lose. If we have candidates we supported during the campaign until we voted, let’s put them aside. This is now the time for true unity. Let’s band together because the betterment of our country is in our hands, and not only in those who we elected,” he said.

He reiterated the importance of having public leaders who would be able to continue the programs and reforms initiated by President Duterte, which he said have proven to benefit the Filipinos.

He said continuity plays a crucial role in attaining Duterte’s goal of providing a comfortable life for all.

Go likewise reaffirmed that he will extend his utmost support to the programs of the next administration that will uplift the lives of Filipinos.

“This election is not only about choosing who will lead us in the next few years but also about continuing the positive changes that were brought by the current administration led by President Rodrigo Duterte,” he said.

Go also gave assurance that the administration will ensure smooth transition of power.
