MANILA, Philippines — Evacuation centers for those displaced by Tropical Depression Agaton must have safety officers who will ensure compliance with health protocols against COVID-19, the Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday.

At a press briefing, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they issued advisories to concerned local government units (LGUs) to make sure that COVID-19 protocols are not disregarded in evacuation centers.

Otherwise, she warned, there might be a rise in infections among those who had to leave their homes due to the onslaught of Agaton.

Vergeire maintained that even if the number of cases is low now, it is still important for everyone to wear masks. She said the protocols against COVID-19, such as masking and physical distancing, would also help prevent other respiratory infections.

“During this time, the risk for diarrhea is also high … so we have provided W.A.S.H logistics to LGUs. We have instructed them to set up washing station and maintain hygiene,” she added.

W.A.S.H – or water, sanitation and hygiene – is the focus of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal.
