Navy arming 2 frigates with surface-to-air missiles
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Navy (PN) is installing surface-to-air missile weapon systems on its two newest warships to boost the warfare capabilities of the frigates.
Naval Public Affairs Office chief Commander Benjo Negranza over the weekend said the Mistral 3 surface-to-air missiles (SAM) arrived at Subic Bay International Airport in Bataan on Friday.
The SAM weapons systems will be installed on the BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF151), the PN’s newest warships.
Negranza said the procurement and delivery of the Mistral SAMs form part of the Frigate Acquisition Project awarded to MBDA Missile Systems in France.
He said surface-to-air missiles are among the primary weapons of the FF150 and FF151 to bolster the PN’s anti-air warfare capability.
Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman Col. Ramon Zagala said the military’s first ever surface-to-air missiles will bolster the country’s capability to defend its sovereign territory.
