Support for Sara-Gibo in 2022 growing
MANILA, Philippines — Support is growing for the possible tandem of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and former defense chief Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. in next year’s national elections, his spokesman has claimed.
Former Camarines Sur representative Rolando Andaya Jr. claimed that several congressmen and local executives have expressed their support for a Duterte-Teodoro tandem.
Andaya said among the first who committed support for the tandem were Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and her father, former Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr.
“There are many key leaders coming out and expressing support to us. First one was – and even I was surprised – Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City. And then former Speaker and my godfather told me to count him in also,” he revealed to House reporters in an interview via Zoom.
Andaya explained that the support of the older Belmonte was expected since “he was our Speaker before and we worked together in Congress.”
“As for Mayor Joy, she is friends with Mayor Inday. And since they’re both women, I think they understand each other,” he said.
Andaya further claimed that former Parañaque congressman Gus Tambunting, Cebu Rep. Eddie Gullas and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno have likewise expressed support for Duterte and Teodoro should they run together.
“We’re trying show that different areas in Luzviminda (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) will support this tandem. These are the kind of leaders that you will support without even thinking about it,” he stressed.
Andaya said Teodoro is set to return to Davao City on July 3 to again meet with Mayor Duterte and to get his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
He said he expects the next meeting to “go deeper into their tandem or common grounds when it comes to platform of government.”
The former lawmaker recalled that the two had preliminary discussions on platform for “agriculture, employment, participation of private and public sector for economic recovery” during their first meeting.
