MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed her gratitude to the British government for honoring Filipino health workers there and supplying COVID-19 vaccines by the United Kingdom’s drug maker AstraZeneca to the country.

British Ambassador Daniel Pruce, who is ending his four-year assignment in the Philippines in August, paid a courtesy visit to Robredo on Thursday afternoon.

“We commended the assistance of the good ambassador and the British embassy in the negotiations of the procurement of AstraZeneca vaccines,” the Vice President said in a Facebook post.

The Philippines and the UK are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their bilateral relations this year.

Robredo thanked Britain’s Prince Charles and Prime Minister Boris Johnson for paying tribute to Filipino health workers in the UK.

“We thanked the good ambassador for the tribute Prime Minister Boris Johnson made to our Filipino health workers in the UK and the important role they continue to play in their COVID-19 response operations,” she said.

“We likewise expressed our gratitude for the heartfelt message Prince Charles gave the Filipino people during our last Independence Day celebration. They are testaments to the high regard accorded to Filipinos in the UK and the close ties that our countries and our peoples enjoy,” Robredo added.

British diplomat Laure Beaufils will succeed Pruce as the ambassador to the Philippines and Palau starting August, the UK government announced in April.

Beaufils is currently the deputy director for Middle East and North Africa of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

In a previous tweet, the newly appointed ambassador said she is looking forward to continuing the work of Pruce in strengthening the ties between the UK and the Philippines.

“I’m delighted to be the next UK Ambassador to the Philippines & to Palau from this summer. It will be an honour to build on the work of Daniel Pruce and his talented team to further strengthen our important ties and friendships,” Beaufils said.
