Public warned on bogus donation drives
MANILA, Philippines — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has warned the public not to fall for bogus donation drives following the consecutive calamities that have hit the country.
There are unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the situation to deceive individuals into giving cash supposedly to be donated to those affected by the calamities, the NDRRMC said.
“We are cautioning fellow Filipinos wanting to help typhoon victims to carefully examine people or groups to which they will give cash or in-kind donations,” it said in a statement in Filipino.
They urged the public to give their donations to established organizations or institutions that have a proven track record in helping affected communities.
“Let us not allow our help to be wasted or given to the wrong persons or groups,” the NDRRMC said.
The council advised the public to coordinate instead with its own local donation unit.
