2 killed, 4 wounded in Negros checkpoint shootout.
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A barangay kagawad was killed while four village watchmen were wounded after they were shot by a murder suspect who tried to evade a quarantine checkpoint in Barangay Minoyan, Murcia, Negros Occidental on Thursday.
The barangay official, Rex Dalmacio, a retired Army soldier, managed to fire back, killing Jonel Cardinal and wounding his companion Alfredo Agustin.
Dalmacio and Cardinal died at the scene.
The wounded village watchmen were identified as Romeo Canoy, Samuel Ciocon, Riommel Adani and Alex Losorio.
Maj. Robert Dejucos said Agustin was arrested in a follow-up operation in Barangay Lopez Jaena and yielded a caliber .45 pistol.
Initial investigation showed that Cardinal and Agustin were riding a motorcycle when they were flagged down for violating the curfew.
Dejucos said they consider the case closed with the arrest of Agustin, who is wanted for murder.
