Don’t tempt Sara to seek presidency — Duterte
MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte is urging politicians not to persuade his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to seek the presidency, saying the position would expose her to risks and require her to make sacrifices.
“If any of you has the ambition... mayor, do not commit that mistake,” Duterte said during the distribution of assistance to farmers last Friday in Cotabato.
“Kaya si Inday ayaw ko. Huwag ninyong demonyohin ‘yang anak ko kasi maawa ako sa kanya. Anak ko ‘yan eh. Mag-presidente… Baka ma-insulto kayo (I don’t want Inday to do it. Do not tempt my daughter because I would pity her. She is my daughter. To run for President... you might end up being insulted),” he added.
Duterte said the presidency is attractive to the corrupt but demanding to those who just want to work.
“If you just want to work, you have to sacrifice... You know, the danger of flying a helicopter at night... If my helicopter encounters an accident and catches fire, before I get fried, son of a b****, please pour water on us,” the President said.
“Those are the sacrifices that we have to make. And you know, however you do it, people will still have something to say. Well, it’s democracy. We can’t do anything about that,” he added.
Carpio is the head of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, a political party seen by some observers as her possible stepping stone toward the presidency. Nine of 13 senatorial candidates endorsed by the party won during last year’s midterm polls.
Carpio has yet to decide whether to run for president in 2022, saying she would “pray for wisdom” on the matter.
