Voters’ registration to resume in January
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is likely to resume the registration of voters for the May 2022 polls in January following the suspension of the barangay and the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
“(Voters’ registration) may come by January. So, we still have a couple of weeks more to prepare for that,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in an interview.
Jimenez said the Comelec will be focusing all its efforts towards preparing for the May 2020 national and local elections since the village and youth polls have already been rescheduled.
President Duterte previously signed Republic Act 11462 deferring the barangay and SK elections from May 2020 to the first Monday of December 2022.
Jimenez said the Comelec is confident the number would be higher than the previous registration period.
“We have yet to come up with a target number. But we did surpass the last target that we set. Hopefully, we can have a higher number,” he said.
From Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, applications from regular registrants, or those aged 18 years and above, reached 3,082,396.
The figure is higher than the poll body’s earlier projected total number of new regular registered voters of 2,030,630.
