MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) reported that there were approximately four deaths every day this year in road accidents that could have been avoided if drivers were more responsible.

HPG said 1,186 people died in 9,663 road accidents from January to September 2019, an average of about four deaths daily.

The month of February had the highest death toll with 188, followed by 186 in September and April with 161.

Based on records of the HPG, 8,809 accidents this year were caused by reckless driving. These include bad overtaking, speeding, drunk driving and using cellphones while driving.

The remaining accidents were caused by poor road conditions, mechanical defects of vehicles and other factors.

It is for this reason that the HPG is urging motorists to practice safe driving to avoid accidents and casualties.

HPG director Brig. Gen. Dionardo Carlos said through proper training, motorists can be more responsible when on the streets.

“Through education, both four wheel drivers at motorcycle riders will know what they are supposed to do before they move,” he said.

Carlos advised motorists to take extra precautions when driving to avoid accidents.

“When traffic is slow-moving, we should maintain a safe distance between vehicles and not go fast,” he said.
