MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area—forecast to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next few days—entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility Wednesday afternoon.

In a briefing late Wednesday afternoon, PAGASA said the LPA was last spotted 860 kilometers east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Weather forecasters are not ruling out the possibility that it may become a tropical cyclone within 48 hours. If it does, the weather disturbance will be named “Marilyn”—the 13th tropical cyclone to affect the country this year.

Liwayway

Meanwhile, the center of Typhoon Liwayway (Lingling) was last seen 420 km northeast of Basco, Batanes with maximum sustained winds of 140 km per hour and gusts of up to 170 kph.

Heading northeast at 10 kph, “Liwayway” is expected to leave PAR on Thursday.

While the typhoon has no direct effect on any part of the country, “Liwayway” is enhancing the southwest monsoon, which affects Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley.

Residents of Batanes and Babuyan Islands will experience light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains due to “Liwayway.”

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon will also bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rainshowers during thunderstorms over Ilocos region, CAR and the rest of Cagayan Valley.

PAGASA warned that travel by sea is dangerous over the seaboards of northern Luzon and western seaboard of Central Luzon. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
