“Here we go again, postponing regular elections. There was already an attempt to do that the last time. It’s unacceptable,” said Namfrel secretary general Eric Alvia.

MANILA, Philippines — Saying it is against the norm, election watchdog National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) yesterday expressed its strong objection to the deferment of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

“Here we go again, postponing regular elections. There was already an attempt to do that the last time. It’s unacceptable,” said Namfrel secretary general Eric Alvia.

Senator-elect Christopher Go previously announced that he would move for the postponement of next year’s barangay and SK elections to 2022 to enable the incumbent barangay and youth officials to serve for a total of four years, just like their predecessors.

But Alvia said Namfrel is against the proposal to postpone anew the barangay and youth polls, which have been deferred twice under the Duterte administration.

He stressed that postponing regular elections is against the norms of a democracy.

“Elections must have regularity and is one of the ways to assess our local leaders,” Alvia explained.

The barangay and SK polls had been postponed from October 2016 to October 2017, and again from October 2017 to May 2018.
