Trillanes cites 'deep wound' in declining Makati teaching post
MANILA, Philippines — Accepting the offer of Sen. Nancy Binay to teach at the University of Makati (UMak) would be insensitive on his part, Sen. Antontio Trillanes IV said Thursday.
Binay, who was reelected for another term in the Senate in the 2019 midterm elections, offered outgoing senator Trillanes a teaching job.
"It was a sincere offer na kung gusto ko daw magturo sa University of Makati so I was very appreciative of that offer and she was really nice about it," Trillanes said at the Kapihan sa Senado forum.
Trillanes, however, had to decline Binay's offer due to "delicadeza."
The outgoing senator was one of the three members of the Senate Blue Ribbon sub-committee that investigated the alleged overpricing of a Makati City project under former Vice President Jejomar Binay when he was the mayor.
"Baka malalim pa 'yung sugat doon. It's not going to be conducive environment also for both sides so 'yun lang. I respectfully declined it," Trillanes said.
According to Trillanes, Binay offered the teaching post for three times already.
"Siguro talagang she (Nancy Binay) feels that I can contribute to the body of knowledge, particularly to the students of University of Makati, kaya ino-offer and that's how I saw it," he said.
Asked if Binay's offer was a gesture of "forgive and forget," Trillanes said he had discussed the issue with his colleague plenty of times before.
Trillanes said Binay appreciated his candor when he explained where he was coming from when he led the investigation into the corruption allegations against the former vice president.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson earlier tweeted that aside from the teaching post, Trillanes was offered a free parking space at the Makati City parking lot, as well as free admission to the Ospital ng Makati and free burial at Makati cemetery.
Trillanes clarified that only the teaching post was offered and the rest of Lacson's tweet was a joke.
Senate camaraderie at its best in the 17th Congress: Sen Nancy Binay offered graduating Sen Trillanes a teaching job at the University of Makati with 24-hr free parking at the Makati parking lot, plus free admission to the Ospital ng Makati and free burial in the Makati cemetery.

In the midst of the investigation into the corruption allegations against the elder Binay in 2014, the former vice president even challenged Trillanes to a one-on-one debate.
The elder Binay later on backed out of the highly-anticipated debate, claiming that it would have been a "mismatch" on his favor due to his 30-year experience in Philippine politics and as a human rights lawyer. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
