‘We repeatedly warned vs overvoting’
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had repeatedly informed the electorate not to overvote as the ballot would be invalidated and considered stray.
James Jimenez, spokesman for the Comelec, yesterday said they have yet to validate reports that around one million votes for senators were spoiled due to overvoting.
“We have not been remiss in educating the public that if you overvote, it will not be counted by the vote counting machines (VCMs),” Jimenez said.
Overvoting in the senatorial race means shading more than 12 ovals on the official ballots.
The Comelec said only 12 slots are available for senators in the midterm elections.
Jimenez said in case of overvoting, the VCMs are not configured to identify which candidates should be included in the Magic 12.
Poll watchdog National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections said some 1.1 million votes for senators were considered stray.
