Downpours seen on election day

MANILA, Philippines — People who will troop to polling precincts today are advised to bring umbrellas due to expected sudden downpours especially in the afternoon or evening.

Warm and humid weather is expected to prevail in the country today, election day, according to Ariel Rojas, weather specialist at the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The whole country is likely to experience sudden heavy rains in the afternoon or evening due to localized thunderstorms, he said.

Rojas said the forecast temperatures for Metro Manila today is between 25 to 35 degrees Celsius.

In Baguio City, it will range from 16 degrees to 24 degrees Celsius; 26 to 34 degrees Celsius in Legazpi City; 26 to 33 degrees Celsius in Metro Cebu; and 25 to 34 degrees Celsius in Metro Davao.

Rojas said the low-pressure area over Mindanao has made landfall and continued to bring rains in some parts of the region.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the low-pressure area was spotted in the vicinity of San Luis, Agusan del Sur. It was expected to dissipate within the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, a frontal system – the interaction of warm and cold air masses – also continued to bring rains over Northern Luzon.

Rojas said the weather bureau was tracking a new low-pressure area over the Pacific Ocean.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, the weather system was located at 3,020 kilometers east of Mindanao. It is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone but has slim chance of entering the Philippine area of responsibility based on latest forecast, according to Rojas.
