No tsunami threat after magnitude 6.1 quake
MANILA, Philippines — The powerful earthquake that rocked parts of Luzon Monday afternoon was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, the country’s disaster office said.
“No destructive tsunami exists based on an available data,” the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said in an advisory.
The magnitude 6.1 earthquake was centered on the town of Castillejos in Zambales. It earlier recorded a magnitude 5.7 quake before it was revised to magnitude 6.1.
The quake sent thousands of people feeling buildings in Metro Manila as establishments shook.
NDRRMC is validating initial reports there were five casualties in Central Luzon.
