11% of new HIV cases due to paid sex
MANILA, Philippines — A high number of the new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the country were due to paid sex, the Department of Health (DOH) revealed.
Its data showed that 11 percent or 107 of the total new HIV recorded nationwide were of transactional sex, which refers to paying or accepting payment for sex.
There were 1,013 new HIV/AIDS cases reported last February, which pushed to 64,291 the total number of cases since January 1984.
The DOH data showed that 60 of the 107 paid for sex and that all of them are males. It also showed that 32 males and two females accepted payment for sex. At least 13 males said they both paid and accepted payment for sex.
Ninety-eight percent (105) were males with ages ranging from 17 to 66 years old.
