MANILA, Philippines — Former special assistant to the president Christopher Lawrence Go has vowed to support the movie industry as he aims to promote more festivals of quality Filipino films.

Go, who attended the Dec. 27 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) awards night, said holding similar film festivals would encourage movie-makers to create quality films to cater to different audiences.

“These festivals provide opportunities for Philippine cinema to regain its glory,” Go told reporters.

Should he win a Senate seat in the 2019 midterm elections, Go said he would introduce measures to ensure the continued viability of the local television and movie industry.

Go added that he has been discussing with various luminaries in the industry to share ideas and craft ways to strengthen Philippine cinema, which is facing stiff competition from foreign movies.

He also noted that illegal online streaming has chipped away at the movie industry’s profits.

Go, if he wins next year, would push for stricter legislation against piracy.

“We can be at par with foreign films if we support our producers,” he said, telling the public to watch Filipino films.
