Go seeks summit for tricycle drivers, operators
MANILA, Philippines — Former special assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go has proposed to concerned government agencies to hold a national summit for the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) in the Philippines to help regulate the operations of commuter tricycles.
Go called the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to jointly organize a national summit for TODA to improve its regulations.
He said the inputs of the tricycle drivers and operators can help develop tricycle regulations, which will eventually ensure a livelihood for them.
“They have many complaints that the national government should listen to. They also have many suggestions on what can be done to ensure their livelihood and service to the public,” he said in Filipino.
Go said there should be a standard set of rules on tricycle regulation and the grant of permits and franchises to prevent a situation where some local government units (LGUs) subject TODA members to unreasonable fees and requirements.
The regulation of tricycles and the granting of franchises for their operation are carried out by LGUs through the local councils, which are under the DILG.
But the licenses of tricycle drivers and the registration of their vehicles are responsibilities that remain with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), which is an attached agency of the DOTr.
