Palace congratulates 4th Filipina Miss Universe Catriona Gray
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday congratulated Bicolana beauty Catriona Gray, who brought the Miss Universe crown and sash back to the Philippines after three years.
“Ms. Gray truly made the entire Philippines proud when she sashayed on the global stage and showcased the genuine qualities defining a Filipina beauty: confidence, grace, intelligence and strength in the face of tough challenges,” the Palace said in a statement released shortly after Gray’s victory.
“In her success, Miss Philippines has shown to the world that women in our country have the ability to turn dreams into reality through passion, diligence, determination and hard work,” it added.
Gray, 24, bested 93 other beauties with her signature “lava walk,” Mayon Volcano-inspired red-hot gown and grace under pressure during the question and answer portion.
She succeeds the 2017 winner, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa, beating first runner-up Tamaryn Green of South Africa and third-place Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela in the competition held in the Thai capital Bangkok.
With her victory, Gray now joins the gallery of Filipina Miss Universe titleholders, namely Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran and Pia Wurtzbach, who won in 2015. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
