DILG calls MOU a ‘win-win solution’ for PNP, ‘Ang Probinsyano’
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government lauded the Philippine National Police and the producers of television show “Ang Probinsyano” for resolving their differences by signing a memorandum of understanding.
Under the agreement signed by both parties Monday, the PNP would allow the use of police camps, vehicles, uniforms and police officers in the production of the show for the story to be more “realistic.”
ABS-CBN said it will “not tarnish the good image and credibility of the PNP and will serve as a medium to uphold the police organization’s core values.”
DILG secretary Eduardo Año called the signing of MOU a “win-win solution.”
“It is the best way to achieve a lasting solution beneficial for the show, the police force and the viewing public,” he said.
Año vowed that the DILG and the PNP will continue to respect ABS-CBN’s freedom to create and convey the story of the program as long as the network also respects the integrity of the police force.
“Without giving us details on the plot, ABS CBN's commitment to give a balanced and fair portrayal of the PNP shall help boost the morale of the thousands of police officers on the ground especially now that internal reforms have been instituted to weed out misfits in the police organization,” the DILG chief said.
He earlier mulled to file legal action against the show’s producers if the story is not changed. DILG then dropped its plan to sue the makers of a show after a “fruitful” meeting with ABS-CBN executives last week.
‘Some sort of pressure’
In an interview with reporters Monday, Sen. Grace Poe welcomed the outcome of the dialogue between the PNP leadership and ABS-CBN executive.
Poe is the daughter of late action star Fernando Poe Jr., who was the first to portray the main role in “Ang Probinsyano.” Her mother, actress Susan Roces, also plays a character in the show.
But the senator said there may have been “some sort of pressure” on the makers of the show after the PNP and DILG decried the supposedly negative portrayal of cops.
“Of course, there’s like some sort of pressure. Let’s be realistic, it will be much easier for the producers to have the cooperation of the agency they’re trying to portray,” she said.
Poe added: “Now, the pressure that came to this is probably the producers have to tell them their long-term plans, but I’m glad.” — Gaea Katreena Cabico
