MANILA, Philippines — The Judicial and Bar Council has opened the call for applications for the next appointee to the Supreme Court of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Council announced on Tuesday that it will start accepting applications for the SC associate justice post, to be vacated by Justice Noel Tijam.

The JBC is tasked to screen applicants for seats in the Judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman.

Tijam is Duterte’s second appointee. He is due to retire from the SC in January next year.

The deadline for applications is set on November 5.

Meanwhile, the JBC has set public interviews for two applicants for the associate justice post, vacated by Chief Justice Teresita De Castro on October 18.

Centro Escolar University School of Law associate dean Rita Linda Jimeno and Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Alex Quiroz would face the Council on the said date.

There are eleven others who are vying for the post of De Castro, but whose interviews remain valid. They are:

  • CA Associate Justice Oscar Badelles
  • CA Associate Justice Manuel Barrios
  • CA Associate Justice Apolinario Bruselas
  • CA Associate Justice Rosemari Carandang
  • CA Associate Justice Stephen Cruz
  • CA Associate Justice Edgardo delos Santos
  • CA Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao
  • CA Associate Justice Ramon Garcia
  • CA Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier
  • Former Ateneo College of Law dean Cesar Villanueva

Duterte has appointed five justices—including Ombudsman Samuel Martires—at the SC. The president has also received JBC's shortlist of candidates, which included nine names to take the seat vacated by Martires. He has yet to pick a name from the list.

Tijam's successor would be Duterte's seventh appointee to the SC.

Before the year ends, the president is also expected to name the next chief justice, following De Castro’s retirement on Wednesday, October 10.
